Short answer

Can ChatGPT do SEO?

Some of it, well. ChatGPT is good at the writing and explaining parts of SEO: drafting titles and meta descriptions, rewriting a muddled opening, writing structured data, explaining what an error means. It cannot see your whole site, your Search Console data or your rankings; it cannot make the changes or earn the links; and it will state numbers it has no way of knowing.

Used on its own it guesses. Given facts about your site, from a crawl and from Search Console, it becomes a fast and useful assistant.

What ChatGPT is good at

  • Titles and meta descriptions. Ask for five versions of a title under 60 characters that lead with the thing the page is about, then pick and edit.
  • Rewriting. Paste a page's opening and ask it to put the answer in the first sentence. It is often better at cutting than at adding.
  • Structured data. It writes valid JSON-LD for a business, a product or an FAQ quickly. Check the result with Google's Rich Results Test.
  • Explaining. What a canonical is, why a redirect chain matters, what a robots.txt rule does. Good for learning, as long as you confirm anything important.
  • Brainstorming. The questions a customer would ask before buying, which become sections or pages.
  • Formulas and queries. Spreadsheet formulas for a Search Console export, or SQL for a crawl database.

What it cannot do

  • See your whole site. At most it reads the pages you paste or the ones it fetches. The faults that matter most, such as broken links between pages or a section blocked from indexing, only show up across the whole site.
  • See your search data. It does not know which queries you appear for, how many clicks a page gets, or where you rank, unless you give it those figures.
  • Know real numbers. Ask it for a search volume or a statistic and it may produce a plausible one. Treat every number it offers as unverified.
  • Keep up. Its knowledge has a cut-off, and search engines change their guidance and features often.
  • Do the work. It does not publish pages, set up redirects or persuade another site to link to you.

Give it facts, not a blank page

The useful pattern is to bring the evidence and let the model do the drafting:

  1. Scan your site. Each check lists the URLs at fault, and the results table exports every row as CSV.
  2. Export the Title tags or Meta descriptions check, and the Pages report from Search Console.
  3. Paste the rows for your top pages into ChatGPT with the current title, the page's top queries, and what the page is for. Ask for a rewrite of each.
  4. Read every suggestion. Keep the ones that are true to the page, publish them, and re-scan.

If you are comfortable with SQL, download the scan as a SQLite database and ask ChatGPT to write queries against its schema. The crawl SQL cookbook has twenty to start from.

How the fix plans here use a model

Every scan here gets a fix plan written by a language model. It is written from the scan's own findings, not from a blank prompt. Each recommendation can cite one of the scan's tasks, and the evidence shown beside it (what was observed, how many URLs it affects, examples) comes from the crawl, not from the model. A citation the report does not contain is dropped before the plan is shown, so the plan cannot point at a problem the crawl never found or quote a count the model made up.

That is the general lesson: a model is worth trusting about your site only as far as it is working from your site's facts.

Is ChatGPT a replacement for an SEO tool, or an SEO person?

Neither. It does not measure, so it does not replace a crawler or Search Console. It does not know your customers or carry responsibility for a migration, so it does not replace judgement. It does make an owner doing their own SEO faster at the writing, which was always a big part of the job.

Questions people ask

Will Google penalise content written with ChatGPT?
Not because a model wrote it. Google judges content on whether it helps the reader, however it was produced. It does treat pages mass-produced mainly to rank as spam, whatever produced them. The practical risk is blandness: text written from nothing but a prompt says what is already on a thousand other pages, and there is no reason to rank it above them.
Can ChatGPT do keyword research?
It can brainstorm: the questions customers ask, the words they use, related topics you have not covered. It cannot measure. It has no access to real search volumes or to your rankings, and when asked for a number it may give one anyway. Check every figure against Search Console or a keyword tool before acting on it.
How do I get my site mentioned in ChatGPT answers?
The same way you get into search results, plus one check. When ChatGPT searches the web it cites pages it can fetch, so make sure your robots.txt does not block OpenAI's search crawler (OAI-SearchBot), which is separate from its training crawler (GPTBot). Then the usual work: a page that answers the question plainly near the top, content in the HTML rather than built by scripts, and other sites citing you.
Can ChatGPT audit my website?
It can review a page you paste in or that it fetches, and its comments on one page are often useful. It cannot crawl a whole site, so it cannot tell you about broken links between pages, orphan pages, duplicate titles across the site, or what your sitemap leaves out. That is a crawler's job; give ChatGPT the crawler's output instead.
